    The Purdue OWL MLA website has been updated to reflect the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (7th ed.) and the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (3rd ed.). The OWL provides examples for the general format of MLA research papers, in-text citations, and the Works Cited page.
  • Cornell University Library Citation Management: MLA Citation Style
    Several college and university libraries create websites with detailed guidelines for using citations. This site, created by the Cornell Library, is easy to navigate and up to date. It is not as comprehensive as the Purdue OWL website, but it provides guidelines for the most common types of citations.

Why We Cite

There are several reasons why citations are used in research papers and projects.

Syntax of Thoughts:

Citation styles, such as MLA, APA and Chicago, are standardized reference formats. It is important to use the appropriate format so the reader of a paper (teacher, professor, peer, etc.) can understand the syntax, or arrangement/order, of the writer's logic and train of thought.


It is important to credit the work, ideas, theories, and thoughts of others. By utilizing a specific citation style within a research project or paper, the writer indicates which portions are borrowed from others, with the intention of strenghtening an argument, analysis or opinion. Failure to cite others' work is not only an act of Academic Misconduct and poor moral judgement, it also violates Intellectual Property Rights. A lack of citations misleads the reader to believe all facts, ideas, theories and opinions originate with the author, thus disrupting the true syntax of logic.
